HOLÁ CUBA – A 2016 Documentary Film Series

As the United States is making historic changes in its relation to the island nation, 90 miles south of Florida, what do people in the United States know about Cuba, her culture, her people and most importantly, her revolution?

The UIC Social Justice Initiative in partnership with the UIC Latino Cultural Center presents Holá Cuba! This summer film series features 5 documentaries that provide a small window into Cuba’s past and present, especially its efforts at social transformation and the building of a new society. The series starts on July 6th and continues each WEDNESDAY until August 3rd.

Presencia Michoacana 2016 at the LCC

Today, we had the honor of hosting Dr. Medardo Serna González, Rector (Chancellor) of the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH) of Morelia, Michoacán, México. In the top photo, Dr. González recognizes some plants in the UIC Heritage Garden satellite by Student Center East; and in the photo below it, LCC Director, Dr. Cabrera shares fresh picked basil with him from the garden.

The Federation of Michoacan Clubs in Illinois (La Federación de Clubes Michoacanos en Illinois – FEDECMI/Casa Michoacán) celebrated its program of activities under “Presencia Michoacana 2016” throughout the month of June. This celebration aimed to show and highlight the cultural and artisanal traditions of Michoacán Mexican identity and values in general. As a special guest, Dr. González and his colleagues visited Chicago in hopes of kickstarting a transnational community project between UMSNH and FEDECMI/Casa Michoacán; part of this project would encourage Deferred Action (DACA) DREAMers to apply to study abroad programs at the UMSNH.

Moreover, Dr. González is currently working hard to gather funding resources to create conservation education programming for the local indigenous communities living by the over-wintering sites where the monarch butterflies take refuge.

Solidarity from Chicago to Orlando in Memory of Pulse Shooting Victims

The Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change (CCUSC) invited UIC and surrounding communities for a special remembrance of the lives taken in PULSE, a gay nightclub in Orlando, FL. This gathering included a collective tree planting procession and a “messages of love” workshop in honor of the victims. Three fig trees were planted across the UIC Heritage Garden satellites #2, 4 & 5 while reading the 49 Orlando victims’ names. We feel deep sorrow for the families, and stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ community.

We ask that this moment is taken not as a single act but as an ongoing conversation to envision what a more peaceful society would look like, and how we can be agents of change to contribute to this vision. #OnePulse
