Presented by: UIC Latino Cultural Center, The UIC Freshwater Lab, the Global Learning Community, and the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO)
Join us for a presentation with historian and activist Antonio Reyes López, followed by a communal dialogue facilitated by scholars from The UIC Freshwater Lab. Antonio will talk about LVEJO’s local sustainability plan and victories—such as the closing down of the Crawford coal plant in Little Village—and focus on the 31st Street Collateral Channel, which is a highly contaminated waterway located next to the new La Villita Park. Learn how community members in Little Village are working together for environmental justice, and how YOU can become part of this emerging movement in Chicago!
- Antonio Reyes López, PhD – Executive Director of LVEJO, has written extensively on anti-poverty and anti-racist social movements in Chicago and has contributed to human rights, environmental justice, and economic justice struggles in Chicago and on the U.S./Mexico border.
- The UIC Freshwater Lab is supported by a $75,000 Global Midwest grant from the Humanities Without Walls consortium, based at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The 15-member consortium, which includes the UIC Institute for the Humanities, is funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
