Maria Varela will reflect on her lifelong activism, through images and poetry. She will show examples of her work, and speak about her experience, exploring “the evolution of resistance movements over nearly three decades, from demonstrations to political organizing to establishing alternative institutions which would model what we would do ‘if we were in charge.’” Her work will be on display at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen through July 30th.
- Maria Varela is a community organizer, writer, photographer, and visiting professor. She worked for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) civil rights organization from 1963 to 1967, primarily in Alabama and Mississippi as a photographer and developer of training materials in voter education, co-operatives, and farm worker unions. In 1968, she joined the Land Grant Movement in New Mexico, working to help Native American and Mexican American weavers and sheep growers restore ancestral lands and cultural practices, receiving the MacArthur Fellowship in 1990 for her work.
