The first Mexican fiction film portraying the country’s black population
Presented by the UIC Latino Cultural Center, African American Cultural Center, and Latin American and Latino Studies
Afro-Mexicans represent 1.2% of Mexico’s total population. They were first recognized as an ethnic group in 2015. La Negrada explores the lack of representation and social norms which contribute to the discrimination of Mexico’s Afro-descendant population. The film employed non-professional local actors to tell the story of Juana and Magdalena, who are romantically involved with Neri, a fisherman in Costa Chica.

Screening followed by a discussion facilitated by Crystal Galván, graduate student with UIC’s Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) Program.

Crystal Galván is from Omak, WA a small agricultural community in North Central Washington. She graduated from Washington State University (WSU) with a dual degree; B.A. in Comparative Ethnic Studies and a B.A. in Sociology. Some of her research interests include the African Diaspora in México, Race and Racism in Latin America, Latinx and Latin American Popular Culture, and Intersectionality.
