The federal government has opened the largest immigration family detention center in Dilley, Texas with a capacity for over 2,000 women and children seeking asylum, most of whom are from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Every day mothers and children fleeing poverty and violence are criminalized and detained. They are strategically held in remote locations making it difficult for them to find attorneys to help them apply for legal protection.
Join us for a presentation and communal dialogue with Virginia Martinez, attorney and community activist with the CARA Pro Bono Project, on the current policies, legal actions, and grassroots efforts to address the pressing issue of family detention.
Virginia Martinez has spent most of her career working in non-profit organizations. She has volunteered periodically with the CARA Pro Bono Project in Dilley, Texas. Martinez has served as Legislative Staff Attorney in the Midwest Office of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) where she was responsible for monitoring regional, state, and local legislation and policy issues affecting Latinos in the 11-state Midwest region. She was appointed to the Illinois Prisoner Review Board on March 8, 2017.
