SUMMARY:The Schooling of Boricuas and Mexic@ns: Language, Race, and Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the UIC Latino Cultural Center    Latina/os are the largest student population in Chicago Public Schools, with Puerto Rican and Mexican youth making up the majority. While Latina/os  have made progress in organizing, community development, and political representation, high school graduation and college-bound numbers are alarmingly low. Join us for an interactive presentation to understand this phenomenon by discussing the history of schooling, educational struggles, and current policies changing the face of these communities in the city of Chicago.    Discussion led by Zitlali Morales, Department of Curriculum & Instruction at UIC; and Mirelsie Velazquez, Department of Latina/Latino Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
