A Bold Peace

As the first installment of the semester’s Civic Cinema series, the Latino Cultural center hosted a screened A Bold Peace on February 12, 2019. A Bold Peace highlighted the lack of military force in Costa Rica as well as key political figures and events that played a role in the abolition of the country’s military in the twentieth century.

The film was followed by a community discussion led by Michele Francis Ferris-Dobles, PhD candidate in Communication at UIC, and attended by members of Chicago’s Costa Rican consulate general. The dialogue highlighted the social movements behind the abolition of the military, with participants curious about how Costa Rica was able to thrive without a national defense army. Including the participation of Costa Rican voices, the enriching conversation informed visitors of the country’s use of national resources to strengthen public institutions, education, and healthcare.
