Aquí y Alla: Art, Identity, and the Flight 587 Memorial
Date(s) - Wednesday, April 11, 2012
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Presented by: UIC Latino Cultural Center, Dominican American Midwest Association (DAMA), and the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance
Aquí y Allá (Here and There) is a metaphor for the experience of many immigrants as they integrate into American culture while they maintain their cultural heritage. Artist Freddy Rodríguez immigrated to New York City in 1963, a year when there were no art museums in the Dominican Republic but Minimalism, Pop Art, and Abstract Expressionism were flourishing within the New York School. In this presentation, Rodríguez will explore how his identity as a Latino and an immigrant informed his development as a visual artist from his early work in geometric abstraction, installation art, symbolism, and paintings on Pre-Columbian identity to his winning design of the Flight 587 Memorial competition.
