Policing Bodies & Minds

Thursday, 5:30 pm–7:30 pm

Community Poem Heading link

How have you experienced policing?

In what ways have you built support systems to address this issue on campus and/or your community?

Police always on my block

Unfair, unsafe interactions with people employed to protect & assist us

A hostile “big brother” analyzing my actions, looking to blame me

Having to be cautious everywhere I go and being mindful of my actions because I don’t know how people around me will react bc of the color of my skin

Anger & paranoia are more constraining than any handcuffs can be

I’m a Palestinian Muslim that feels singled out in my all-white neighborhood to being “randomly selected” at airports. Found others who share my experience, found people who have experienced similar oppressions and we love and support each other.

Networking is the most important thing to build support. Standing in solidarity to build support systems to address the issue on policing

I try my hardest to speak in moments like now so that people are interested and intrigued. I post on social media because it is a popular way of communication

People think the police force is either good of bad black or white… but I think the law is a little more gray.

Every hijabi women or arab man can say they’re been or seen a family member be randomly selected at the airport. Being subjected to that confuses fear. Causes distress

In your own home

Tbh, we try to make it a joke. We try to normalize it. But paranoia against your own people shouldn’t be normalized.
