Climates of Inequality Project

Climates of Inequality is a project of the Humanities Action Lab, a coalition of colleges and universities across the US and internationally partnering with environmental/climate organizations on a national curriculum and public memory project. This evolving multi-media installation was initially created by a coalition of students, educators, and community leaders in over 22 cities across the US, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Mexico.

As a traveling exhibit and digital platform with related programming, Climates of Inequality provides multiple ways to learn about environmental issues affecting various communities, the historical roots of these issues, and strategies to transition from extractive to generative environments. The University of Illinois Chicago’s Rafael Cintrón Ortiz Latino Cultural Center in partnership with community organizations Alianza Americas and Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO) are part of a leadership cohort in the Humanities Action Lab that has been awarded a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to establish Climates of Inequality and the COVID Crisis: Building Leadership at Minority Serving Institutions, a national initiative to build infrastructure for minority-serving colleges and universities (MSIs) to foster public humanities climate leaders in a world changed by COVID-19. The initiative opens opportunities to reimagine public humanities pedagogies and practices as tools for shaping this new world and pursuing social justice. Dr. Rosa Cabrera, Executive Director of the Latino Cultural Center is a HAL MSI Climate Leadership Fellow, a cohort focusing on faculty of color to embed climate justice public humanities courses and collaborations into their institutions. Cabrera teaches an Environmental and Climate Justice course cross-listed in Latin American and Latino Studies, Anthropology, and Museum and Exhibition Studies.
