Berta Cáceres was a Honduran environmental and indigenous rights activist; killed by gunmen at her home last year. This program will honor her memory with a musical storytelling performance and dialogue led by two Honduran activists: Melissa Cardoza, author of 13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance, and singer Karla Lara, who is featured in one of the book’s stories. These stories of Honduran women resisting brutal repression present an opportunity to examine parallels between current struggles in Honduras and the U.S.
This presentation will be in Spanish, interpreted simultaneously by Matt Ginsberg-Jaeckle.
- Melissa Cardoza is an autonomous feminist, poet and writer born in Honduras amidst the sexual rebelliousness of the 60s. She is of mixed Afro-descendent Garífuna and indigenous Lenca heritage, and describes herself as a “GaríLenca… in resistance to parties, husbands and states, a traveling and curious woman.”
- Karla Lara is a feminist who sings and writes of resistance. She’s been involved in the political social movements of her native Honduras since the 1980s.
