A Planet for Rent

October 6, 2016

3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Presented by: UIC Latino Cultural Center

Join us for an interactive presentation with author José Miguel Sánchez – better known for his pen name Yoss – as he reads excerpts from his current book A Planet for Rent. The novel is a critique of life under Castro in the ‘90s that draws parallels with a possible Earth of the not-so-distant future. His talk will focus on how his writing is a form of political activism in Cuba. Learn how he ties history to science fiction which propelled him to share his journey as a young writer.

  • Yoss has won many awards including the Premio David in the science fiction category for Timshel. Together with his peculiar pseudonym and aesthetic of an impenitent rocker, has allowed him to stand out amongst his fellow Cuban writers. Today, Yoss writes both realistic and science fiction works. Alongside these novels, the author produces essays, reviews, compilations, and actively promotes the Cuban science fiction literary workshops, Espiral and Espacio Abierto.
  • Book Signing! Guests will be able to purchase Yoss’ book!
