Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2017

Join the UIC Latino Cultural Center, Mexican Students de Aztlán (MeSA), and the Heritage Garden Student Group for this week-long celebration!

Communal Altar Installation – Monday, Oct 30 – 12pm to 2pm

We invite you to participate in our annual communal altar installation. Bring a photo or a remembrance item of a departed loved one to place on our altar.

CalaverasCempazúchitl, & Monarch Butterflies – Workshop Wednesday, Nov 1 – 12pm to 3pm

Decorate a sugar skull, make paper cempazúchitl (marigold) flowers, create skull-shaped seed bombs to help preserve Monarch butterfly habitats, and honor departed loved ones through storytelling.

Vida y Muerte – Ceremony and Dance Thursday, Nov 2 – 2pm to 3:30pm

Be part of the Ochpaniztli cycle ceremony led by Nahua Lessons to synchronize with Nature’s cycle of cleansing, focusing on our internal selves and our surroundings. Enjoy pan de muerto, hot chocolate, and share a story or memory of departed loved ones through Historias Monarca.

Latino Cultural Center and the National Museum of Mexican Art Nov 1 – 6pm to 8pm at NMMA

The LCC staff will honor ecofeminist Berta Cáceres during the Museum’s Dia de los MuertosAfter Dark Event, with an interactive ofrenda installation.

Latino Cultural Center and Casa Michoacán Nov 2 – 7pm to 9pm at Casa Michoacan

Join us at the exhibit opening of ARTivist Esperanza Gama‘s Manos de México, an installation of altars honoring the lives of Mexican artisans with art created at the LCC.
