OPEN MIC!

Don’t miss out on the amazing talented poets as they share their own poetic words on this month’s theme, “Reclaiming Personal Narratives.”

Leading the night will be our featured poets: Stephanie Hernandez and Mariel Rancel

  • How do we give people with disabilities voice in their own lives?
  • How does your life challenge the stereotypes about your identities?

Stephanie Alma Hernandez is a Presidential Award Program scholar at UIC and a student with a disability, raised in the Southside of Chicago. She is a Junior majoring in Psychology with minors in Law and Disability and Human Development. Stephanie is currently a Student Educator at the UIC Disability Resource Center, where she educates others on disability culture through meetings with students and the creation of cultural events. Through her poetry, Stephanie hopes to expand perspectives on the intricate forms and shapes of the disabled Latina experience.

Mariel Rancel is a senior at UIC majoring in Biology with minors in Nutrition and Disability and Human Development. In the summer of 2017 she studied global food security, nutrition, and sustainable development in Geneva, Switzerland. She is a dedicated chemistry tutor and hopes to become a science teacher and researcher in the future. As a disabled Puerto Rican woman, she plans to write science curriculum sensitive to diverse students, especially those with disabilities.
