Presented by: UIC Latino Cultural Center in partnership with the Department of Anthropology, Latin American and Latino Studies Program, and the National Museum of Mexican Art
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to celebrate with El Colectivo Altepee from Veracruz, Mexico, along with the Jarochicanos from Pilsen! Come and learn about their sustainable cultural practices and traditions. Through dance and music, participants will be able to share their own stories by writing a “verso” (verse) on chocolate, and sing or say it to the music. Get ready for a creative and vibrant fandango experience that will illuminate the importance of cultural sustainability as a tool to create identity and community across borders from Veracruz to Pilsen!
Colectivo Altepee is a group of youth from different parts of southern Veracruz who see “música de cuerdas” (strings) as a tool of social consciousness in a shared environment: the fandango, a traditional celebration of their indigenous communities.
Jarochicanos is a music collective of families based in Pilsen, Chicago that work with Colectivo Altepee.
