Join us for an interactive workshop with Professor Javier José Mendoza and UIC School of Theatre & Music’s newly formed student ensemble, Mariachi Fuego. Learn about the history and development of the Mariachi tradition in Jalisco and surrounding Mexican states, the significance of instruments used in the musical ensemble, and the difference between traditional and modern Mariachi music. Students will share ways in which they have benefited academically and personally from their involvement with Mariachi Fuego.
Program closes with a 15 minute performance by Mariachi Fuego!
Javier José Mendoza is a Visiting Scholar and Orchestra Director at the UIC School of Theatre & Music. Currently the Artistic Director of the Chicago Arts Orchestra he is active in a movement to re-debut music from archives in Mexico, Guatemala, and Spain bringing wonderful forgotten works back into public awareness. He founded Mariachi Fuego, a new musical ensemble at UIC dedicated to the performance of Mariachi music. The ensemble is open to all UIC students regardless of major.
