Join Mexican Students de Aztlán (MeSA), Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), and Union for Puerto Rican Students (UPRS) for last Noche de Poetas (Poetry Night) of the Spring 2018 Semester.
This program is in celebration of the 24th Annual Pa’Lante Conference and Puerto Rican diaspora!
OPEN MIC!
Don’t miss out on the amazing talented poets as they share their own poetic words on this month’s theme “Action and Transformation”
- How can we express ourselves through cultural and artistic practices?
- How can these practices bring us closer to our roots?
Leading the night will be our featured poet: La Escuelita Bombera de Corazon.
La Escuelita Bombera de Corazon trains students of all ages in the Afro-Puerto Rican folk art, dance, song, and drumming of Bomba music. Its dancers have performed across the Midwest and worked with the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center to pass on the bomba tradition.
Ivelisse Díaz, lead singer of Buya and the most recognizable voice in Chicago’s vibrant Afro-Boricua scene leads most of the classes. She brings her high-energy dance instruction style and some of the city’s busiest Bomba drummers and dancers from the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center to Old Town School of Folk Music. Their performances are authentic celebration of Bomba, one of the oldest music style hailing from the island of Puerto Rico.
