In 1999, a set of 20 bronze medallions were set into a 5-block stretch of sidewalk in Pilsen; they are replicas of the monumental Aztec sculpture known as the Calendar Stone or Piedra del Sol.
Professor Delia Cosentino‘s presentation will talk about how these modern reproductions relate to a history of conflicted Mexican spaces, and demonstrate how their meaning in Pilsen is likewise complicated.
- Delia Cosentino is Associate Professor of History of Art & Architecture at DePaul University, specializing in the visual culture of Greater Mexico. A research grant from DePaul’s Center for Latino Research supports her current study of the Aztec Calendar Stone replicas in Pilsen. Her research presentation is entitled, “A Conflicted Compass Rose: The Aztec Calendar Stone and the Production of Mexican Space in Chicago and Beyond.”
