RMI: Masculinity in Language

March 20, 2018

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Address

Chicago, IL 60612

Presented by: Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change - Reimagining Masculinities Dialogue Initiative and Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc.

You may have heard individuals use derogatory terms towards others to prove their masculinity, reassure their dominance over others, and assert their gender and sexual superiority. What did you do? What could you do?

This dialogue emerges out of a need to address how those terms demean certain communities’ identities, worldviews, and practices. We will focus on the violence inflicted by certain speech when expressed with family, friends, peers, and within communal spaces such as student organizations. Through dialogue, we will also address the environment(s) that support the use of toxic language to prescribe what masculinity should be. In our time together, participants will educate themselves and each other about the effect and impact of disempowering language.

Reimagining Masculinities Initiative is a collaboration between the Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change (CCUSC) that strives to cultivate, support, affirm, and create male allies and advocates. Through dialogues, films, workshops, and personal stories, this initiative unpacks what it means to be masculine, and explores issues of masculinity and gender.
