Survivors’ Testimonies of Imprisonment

October 6, 2015

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Presented by: UIC Latino Cultural Center and the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies

Join us for a conversation with María del Carmen SillatoIrene Martínez, and Juan Miranda as they share the book Traces. Memories of Resistance (Argentina 1974 – 1983), which brings together unpublished works of survivors of State terrorism in Argentina. This poetic and courageous anthology uses the power of memory as another way to heal social wounds and seek justice.

  • María del Carmen Sillato – Editor of Traces. Born in Rosario, Argentina. She has lived in Canada since 1983 where she went into exile after having spent years in prison during the last military dictatorship.
  • Irene Martínez – One of the contributors of Traces. An Argentinian doctor who has lived in Chicago since she left her country as a survivor of imprisonment.
  • Juan Miranda – One of the contributors of Traces. He survived an 18 month imprisonment at one of the most notorious clandestine detention centers during the Argentinian Dirty War.
