- Can you imagine a world without chocolate?
Join us for a conversation with arts journalist Ruth Lopez who will share her recent visit to cacao plantations in Mexico and discuss the future of the embattled cacao tree. With the destruction of the tropical rainforest—the ideal environment for the cacao tree—and diseases, cacao researchers along with the chocolate industry have begun to put a number of systems in place to protect the future of chocolate. This presentation will provide an overview of the issues and explain why the practice of sustainable farming is more important than ever.
Ruth Lopez is a writer and cultural journalist based in Chicago, and is the author of “Chocolate: The Nature of Indulgence.” Lopez is a former fellow of the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University.
