Crisis in Venezuela, What is the Future of the Bolivarian Revolution?

February 21, 2019

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Presented by the UIC Latino Cultural Center and Latin American and Latino Studies Program

The self-proclamation of the Head of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, as caretaker President of the country has intensified the acute political crisis engulfing Venezuela. Against the backdrop of a steep economic malaise, social upheaval and rising violence, President Nicolás Maduro, who began a new 6-year term after winning controversial re-elections, declared he is the only legitimate leader of the county and vowed to continue pressing on with the Bolivarian Revolution. International reaction to these developments has been swift, some warning about the potential, disastrous effects of US interventionism in Venezuela.

How will Venezuela cope with this difficult moment? Are there real prospects for a mediated solution or will the situation escalate into more violence? Is Venezuela nearing a Humanitarian Emergency?
