The COVID-19 Masking Project

Although the UIC Latino Cultural Center (LCC) and Asian American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC) will remain closed for the summer, we have developed in partnership a new virtual project to engage with students in a creative and meaningful way during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wearing face masks to manage the spread of COVID-19 has become part of a “new normal” life around the world. In this project, we want to unpack in a fun but thoughtful way how these masks can carry powerful ideas that transcend the individual through the acts of making, gifting, receiving, and wearing them!

Take a selfie with your favorite mask and tell us your story by considering these questions:

  • Why is this your favorite mask? Is this a homemade mask and/or who made it?
  • What messages do you think it sends to others about who you are?
  • How does it represent a collective commitment to protect the well-being of frontline workers and other vulnerable communities?
  • How does it represent a collective identity that agrees with or challenges a particular set of U.S. cultural values?

Submit your Face Mask Selfie & Story via the submission panel below:

  • E.g., They/Them/Ellx/Ella | She/Her/They/Them | He/Him/His
  • UIC students should check with their instructors about receiving extra credit for participating in this project.
  • Accepted file types: jpg, Max. file size: 2 MB.
Maximum file size - 2 mega bytes.
