ARTivism: Make Art for Climate Action!
On September 18th, 2019 the LCC and the Sunrise Movement Chicago hosted an ARTivism in preparation for the Chicago Youth Climate Strike. Students, faculty, staff, and surrounding community members created environmental-justice themed posters to use during the Chicago Youth Climate Strike. Cardboard, poster boards, paint, paint brushes, markers, crayons, ink, spray paint, stencils, and food were provided.
This program was co-sponsored by the UIC Office of Sustainability and the Great Lakes Center for Occupational Health and Safety; community organizations Greenpeace and the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO); and UIC student organizations Roosevelt Network, Student Alliance for Public Health and the Environment, and Urban Studies Student Association.
On September 20th, 2019, LCC staff along with UIC staff, students, faculty, and community members attended the Chicago Youth Climate Strike. The contingent formed and rallied in the UIC quad at 10:30am making their way to Grant Park. Activists then marched from Grant Park to the rally at Federal Plaza where community members, including LCC Student Educator Luis Cabrales, shared their experiences about climate injustices in their neighborhoods.
