The UIC Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement (IPCE)—in partnership with the Latino Cultural Center (LCC)—hosted over 100 Chicago Public High School (CPS) students from the Global Citizenship Initiative schools: Alcott, Washington, Richards, and Chicago Virtual to help them understand how they can make a difference through policy change and social movements. At the LCC, students participated in an Arts-Based Civic Dialogue by using the LCC mural—El Despertar de las Americas (The Awakening of the Americas)—as a tool for civic engagement to explore collective creative solutions for common challenges. CPS youth identified and interpreted social issues represented in the art, connected their own personal stories, and worked together to harness their community knowledge and assets to build coalitions for positive social change.
