Mayor of Loiza Puerto Rico visits UIC
On August 31, 2018, the Union for Puerto Rican Students and the Latin American and Latino Studies Program invited Julia M. Nazario to visit UIC. As the mayor of Loiza, Puerto Rico, Nazario saw first-hand the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria on this coastal community East of San Juan, and she shared some of her perspective on the rebuilding. Dancers and drummers from Chicago’s Puerto Rican Cultural Center performed to welcome Nazario and celebrate her visit. Another honored visitor to the LCC that day included Luis Rosa Pérez, a Puerto Rican nationalist activist and former political prisoner, featured in the LCC mural.
