Responding to Environmental Injustice

featured poet Ayoko Djisseglo on stage

On September 12th, 2019, the LCC hosted the first Noche De Poetas of the semester in collaboration with Mexican Students de Aztlán (MESA), Students for the Advancement of Freedom, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), and Union for Puerto Rican Students (UPRS).

The theme of this month’s Noche de Poetas was “The Amazon within Us: Responding to Environmental Injustice.” It questioned what we, as individuals and as a community, can do to help the environment and how we could keep the corporations accountable for their environmental impact.

The night was led by featured poet, Ayoko Djisseglo, a UIC English major with a concentration in professional writing. She wants her poems to be able to relate to experiences, personal and general, that reveal the reality of circumstances in society and amongst individuals.
