The Hunting Ground
As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the LCC teamed up with the Women’s Leadership Resource Center (WLRC) and the Campus Advocacy Network (CAN) to present The Hunting Ground as part of the LCC’s Civic Cinema programming series. This documentary is a piercing exposé of rape culture on college campuses following students pursuing both their education and justice, and the film screening was followed by a discussion facilitated by Athanasia Papaioannou (WLRC) and Andie Celerio (CAN). After watching the film students present were shocked by the statistics regarding sexual assault on campus.
Many inquired about UIC’s policies and wanted to get involved. A violence prevention program that addresses this issue is Peers to Allies, which trains students on how to be better bystanders. The Reimagining Masculinities Initiative also tackles this issue from a different lens and a dialogue approach.
