Student Art Submissions, Spring 2017

In the Spring of 2017, this ARTivism project was initiated by students and the UIC Latino Cultural Center to support creative practices that can catalyze change to advance social and environmental justice. The LCC invited all creatives from the UIC campus and neighboring communities to participate by submitting their original activist work* related to one of the “Calls to Action” topics listed below.

At 7 am on March 16th, the new Trump Administration released their budget proposal to fund the federal government for the coming fiscal year (FY2018). The Trump proposal includes massive budget cuts (more than $54 billion in cuts to domestic programs in one year alone). The proposal includes the proposed elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the Corporation for National and Community Services (Americorps), among other federal agencies.

“Triggered” This piece was inspired by the late artist Georgia O’Keeffe who often depicted vaginas to look like flowers in her paintings. This male is using a woman’s femininity against her, much like those (government or not) that don’t think that women are intelligent enough to control what they do with their bodies. Despite being shot, she still remains standing. Women are resilient and magnificent beings. Just like flowers, we are reborn again when the storm passes. We take up space. We will use the stems in our veins to bloom bigger and more powerful than ever. Our femininity is an essentially weapon, and I’d like to invite the audience to fight like a girl.

“Barrio, respira” was created as a commission for the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO). The piece depicts individuals of a community coming together to transform an area overtaken by concrete into an area capable of growing a larger than life sunflower.
