Stolen Lives – Esperanza Gama, Fall 2017
Esperanza Gama facilitated an ARTivism workshop for the UIC LCC community on October 5, 2017. Participants were invited to paint, draw, and sew on many portraits of women, adding to the facial imagery begun by Gama. The portraits were designed to celebrate and honor the lives and bravery of women who have suffered domestic violence and cruel deaths, in connection with Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Gama encouraged people to bring the portraits to life with bright colors, compelling iconography, and messages of empowerment. One portrait honored Berta Cáceres, a Honduran environmental activist who was murdered in 2016.

Community Exhibitions:
After the ARTivism program, these pieces were displayed in an exhibition of Gama’s work at Casa Michoacán on November 2nd. The portrait of Cáceres was also included in an ofrenda at the National Museum of Mexican Art on November 1st.
